Over this past weekend, the TEI Bike Team mounted our two-wheeled bike beasts and traversed over 150 miles and quite a few hills from Houston to Austin on the mega bike ride known as the MS150. I’m sure you’re familiar with the ride and its 13,000+ participants and noble goal of funding research to cure the debilitating disease multiple sclerosis, so I’ll spare you the nitty gritty details. Instead,...

Before I left the office on Friday, I checked Transtar’s traffic map to see what the roads were looking like:
Not good. That long stretch of unhappy red on 59 between Greenway Plaza and Downtown means my 25 minute commute could easily grow into 50 minutes. . .or more. And that’s not fun commute time either; it’s stuck in stop-and-go traffic, dealing with frustrated drivers who just want...

I’m officially no longer the only traffic engineer in Houston biking to work.
This morning, my friend and colleague Brad Eaves decided to join the exclusive bike-to-work club. He apparently experienced that bizarre desire to throw on skin-tight spandex that strikes us all from time to time (come on, admit it). Or perhaps he simply realized that it was a beautiful spring morning in Houston and that...

Okay, it’s true: Google might be trying to take over the world, but if they continue to do it by using the forces of Awesomeness, then who am I to complain? Their latest innovation is a little gadget that the bike community has been craving since. . .I don’t know. . .forever? It’s the ability to map your bike trips on Google Maps. That’s right, the Bikers will now have the same amazing powers...

I’m biking to work and loving it and blogging about it for posterity. It’s a 16-mile trip over the snow-capped mountains, through the verdant forests, and across the murky swamps of Houston. I’ve enjoyed sights that one can only view atop his or her trusty steed/bicycle. It’s a great experience, and I encourage everyone to try it.
Lisa Gray from the Chronicle pointed out that I’ve never really...

Here’s a rundown of how this blog post was supposed to go. It was going to be all about how you don’t need a fancy, expensive bike to comfortably and safely undertake a bike commute to work. You don’t need things like carbon fiber frames, carbon forks, or BB30 bottom brackets. You don’t even have to know what those things are — all that matters is that they’re expensive. Like this:...

In the spirit of TEI’s support of all means of transportation, I’m biking to work and living to blog about it (and getting lots of stares in the elevator thanks to the bike and accompanying attire). It’s a 16-mile trip from my home in Eastwood to the office in Sharpstown. And how’s this for an anticlimax: I’ve already started, and I’ve done it 4 or 5 times. So I can say confidently and...

Traffic Engineers, Inc. believes that transportation involves more than just moving cars – even in Houston, where the family car, like the family dog, is very much a member of the family. Just stand out on Westheimer one afternoon and look around: there are cars, sure, but there are also buses, bicycles, and people who have discovered their own set of feet and legs. These alternative transportation...
