Innovation in Interchange Design

What is it that in many cases, the French seem to be ahead of the US on innovation in transportation design.  First they are putting in roundabouts at something like 1000 per year, and now this.  The diverging diamond, an innovative interchange design being implemented in Missouri has been utilized in France since the seventies.

Maybe it is the fear that in our litigious society, as my favorite quote in the article puts it “wrecks gonna happen”, though likely this design should prove safer and more efficient at locations where there are heavy volumes exiting the crossover street.
